Testimonials

Sometimes in life, you get exactly what you need, and this was it

My time at Doron Yoga was one of the most transformative and healing moments of my life. Sometimes in life, you get exactly what you need, and this was it. I was going through a major transition in life and decided to find a yoga teacher training. At the recommendation of a friend I came to Doron. The setting of the yoga center is absolutely breathtaking with a beautiful view of Lake Atitlan. The facilities here are well designed and have a rustic yet luxurious feel. The vegetarian food and snack bar is top notch (coming from someone who ate a decent amount of meat back home). You are very connected with nature and it’s an ideal place to dive into work with your mind and body.

-Naushad G., Teacher Training Student, January 2018

The whole place is a living example of mindfulness and zen, yet practical and down to earth

I spent a week of personal retreat in the center- yoga in the morning (with an amazing view to the lake and volcanoes) and delicious healthy meals and smoothies throughout the day. The campus itself is fantastic, drowning in green, lovely cabins, hammocks spread between the trees with a small river flowing by. The staff is friendly and helpful, dedicated to provide the best experience. The whole place is a living example of mindfulness and zen, yet practical and down to earth- Doron’s attention to detail is visible both in the facilities, and in the content of center.

-Benny Fellman, Retreat, July 2019

You will never forget seeing the sunrise every morning as you do your pranayama

I was looking for a yoga retreat that’d allow me to disconnect from my routine and would re-connect me in many other ways. DYZC was more than I could have imagined. Lake Atitlan is beautiful, the Center has the most amazing energy, Doron is perhaps the best instructor I’ve had, the food was delicious, and the staff super nice and helpful.

You will never forget seeing the sunrise every morning as you do your pranayama, and feeling the first rays of sunshine while doing yoga in the beautiful shala. Honestly, it is hard to describe…it just felt amazing.

-Carolina, New Year’s Retreat, December 2018

Being immersed in such beauty on a daily basis relaxed my soul

What a blessing to have found Doron and experience the yoga and zen meditation center. Being immersed in such beauty on a daily basis relaxed my soul and allowed me time to slow down and focus on other important aspects of my life such as cultivating my yoga practice and spending more time in meditation. Doron’s approach is practical and sensible and I strongly encourage anyone dreaming of the perfect yoga retreat to make this trip.

-Heidi Cornell, Yoga Body Zen Mind, February 2018

Why Doron Yoga

Doron Yoga™ is devoted to guiding people into holistic health and happiness. Through yoga, meditation, pranayama, and nutrition, we are devoted to developing a calm and focused mind as well as a balanced and healthy body. We specialize in creating a toolbox of practical life skills, blending ancient wisdom with current modalities. We promote a compassionate international community guided by authenticity, service, awareness and joyfulness.

Local Impact, Global Impact

Doron Yoga’s mission extends to our local community and our beautiful natural surroundings. Located in a small Maya village, we are mindful of both our environmental as well as our social impact. We support local artisans in our furnishings and decor, as well as by creating jobs, and live by permacultural principles such as eating locally and seasonal, reducing our waste production, and recycling natural matter into compost.

What is Zen?

“When walking just walk. When sitting just sit. Above all, don’t wobble.”- Chan Zen Master Yúnmén Wényǎn (864-949)

Many people in the Western world are conditioned to spend their time thinking about the problems in their lives. It’s considered a great virtue to be thoughtful and considerate in making decisions, and yet the amount of time and energy spent on worrying can cause stress and disharmony in the modern mind.  Rather than remaining in the present moment and acting on solutions when available,  it’s common to become lost in thought, leading to depression, anxiety, and non-productivity among other imbalances.

The practice of Zen teaches us how to remain in the present moment. By bringing total awareness to the present state of the body and the mind, Zen shows us how to overcome our destructive thought patterns and act on our deepest intuitions rather than our modern conditioning. By overcoming the noisy patterns of the mind, we can fully embrace the experience of living, and become the productive, self-affirming people are meant to be.

About Our Food

Our founder, Doron Hanoch, has training as a holistic chef, and brings his nutritional wisdom into every dish we serve here at DYZC. Every meal is made with seasonal, local ingredients, fresh veggies, and herbal teas. Much of the food on our plates grows right here in our own sustainable gardens. Guests of our retreats all ready have 3-meals a day included in their package.

Every meal is full of special touches that elevate it in terms of nutrition. Our oatmeal, for example, is packed full of chia seeds, flax seeds, coconut, and other super foods. We grow our own coffee, bananas, avocados, lettuce, a variety of herbs and many other fruits and vegetables.  It’s a heaven for health-conscious foodies.

We are happy to accommodate any necessary dietary restrictions, and simply ask that you submit your dietary preferences prior to the retreat. Click here for more information about our food.

Do I need yoga experience to join?

We accept beginners and advance yogis alike! Whether or not you have a yoga and meditation practice, you’re welcome to join us and learn more.

All that’s necessary is an open mind. For those with a more advanced practice, Doron is happy to offer adjustments to make the practice challenging enough to meet your needs.

Upon booking, you will receive a Welcome Packet that includes a list of what to bring with you, as well as more information about preparing for a trip to Guatemala. You can find all the necessary information about visas, vaccinations, weather, and more within this informational guide.

Is it safe to travel in Guatemala?

Lake Atitlan is a popular tourist destination, and it is a well-traveled part of the country. Our shuttle company uses main highways to travel here from the city, and the area is politically stable. Normal travel precautions should be taken, such as not displaying fancy jewelry or expensive cameras when en-route to the center. Always be smart and aware when traveling.

In addition, there are several reccomended vaccinations for travel to Guatemala. A list of these can be found in our Welcome Packet, but you should consult a health care professional if concerned.

Can I donate to the local community?

We can accept donations both for the local community, and on behalf of DYZC! There is a nearby school that we are happy to accept school supplies to help support. Clothes, shoes, and toiletries can also be donated, and will go to support the families of our workers.

In addition, the center is always looking for yoga props, mats, as well as first aid essentials like ibuprofen and other drug store items.

We also accept tips for our hardworking cooking and cleaning staff! Many of our girls have families of their own to support, so this is one of the very best ways to give back.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

All courses at our center are taught in English! Spanish is the common language used around the lake, but as it is a well-traveled area, many people navigate without knowing any Spanish at all.
