8 Tips for a New Yoga Teacher
8 Tips for New Yoga Teachers
So you’ve finished your teacher training, now what?
Becoming a yoga teacher is not exactly a traditional career path. Yoga today is not just one thing. Not only are there so many different types of yoga, there are also so many different spaces where yoga is offered; studios, gyms, spas, retreats, and even corporate offices. It can be difficult to decide where to start, or what it is that you even want to do.
We will offer you here 8 important practices and actions for someone that graduated a teacher training and is looking for the next step. Start developing your own personal yoga practice and community, therefore making it easier to start offering your skills professionally.
8 tips for new yoga teachers
1. Keep Up the Daily Practice
There really is no substitute to practice. Practice is everything, and practicing what you teach is very important. Only someone that shows up, deals with the struggles and success of being on the mat and in the right state of mind, is able to share it well with others. Nothing compares to experience. Even if you practice 30 minutes on days you do not have time, or do some pranayama or meditation. Do something every day.
2. Create a Website
Even a one page site with your bio, info on where you did your training, how was your experience there, what you learned and what you loved most. Maybe expand on your favorite part of the training, which shows what your favorite part to teach may be.
3. Start a Newsletter
Your newsletter can go out monthly or even every two months. you can share where you teach, what you are up to, and some insight. You are welcome to share info from other teachers that you value. You can use any of our posts for them. Simply put the first paragraph as a teaser and then link to our blog post or youtube channel. Please never post the entire post anywhere. Always link it to the original and please credit the authors. One day people will share your stuff and you would appreciate the gesture. It also shows humbleness and generosity.
4. Make Your Social Networks Professional
Maybe you already have an instagram account, or a facebook page, or maybe you are opening a new one for your yoga specialty. Either way, make it professional while staying personal and friendly. Notice language and quality of images. What is your message? Are you showing off, or are you sharing valuable info? Make sure it shows you are in service. Yogis are born to serve!
5. Build Community
Now that you have a site, a newsletter and social media, it is time to build the community. Consistency is one of the most important ingredients. This is true for your practice, for replying to comments and questions, and for posting and sharing. Make sure you share regularly. Consider having a real life group for meeting. This can be free classes, a meditation group which I highly recommend, or a study group. You can join other groups that already exists, and become part of their community. This is also a great way to start your own community.
6. Keep Studying
Take workshops, classes, and go on retreats. We welcome all of our graduates with open arms and are delighted to see them return to us, alone or with friends and students. Study with us the 300hr program, or come on a retreat to deepen what you know. Stay tuned for our online academy.
7. Start Teaching
Get on a substitute list of your favorite studio, gym or any yoga teacher friends. Teach your family and close friends for free, teach in your workplace. Teaching practice makes for great teachers as well as will help you deepen the understanding of yoga.
8. Be in touch
Friends, teachers and colleagues are a great resource. It is important to stay connected to those you value. Not everyone, select wisely. If you are a Doron Yoga graduate, send us an update sometimes, maybe through a comment on youtube or instagram. Give us a testimonial to post and we can link back to you. Send us a video to publish, and give us your info of where you teach so we can help promote you. We love supporting the Doron Yoga Tribe!
We wish you a great journey onward. Going through a Yoga Teacher Training is a true gift for yourself and those around you. Remember, consistent practice is the key to success. Practice yoga, meditation, teaching and being a good person.
