Surya Namaskar – Sun Salute A Explained in Detail
How to Do Surya Namaskar – Sun Salute A Explained in Detail
Sun salute A is the basic warm up that is practiced in most yoga classes; ashtanga, vinyasa, or any flow class. This video shows how to do Surya Namaskar A, (sun salute A) with correct vinyasas. It also includes the sanskrit counting, drsti and ujjayi breath. Each vinyasa is a movement into a pose. There are nine vinyasas in sun salute A.
This is the first part of the ashtanga vinyasa system. Firstly; it serves as a great warm up, as it has many forward folds, backbends and push-ups. These are for example chaturanga and opening up to upward dog. Secondly; these poses keep the body moving, warming up the spine. Flowing movements create heat, and through that, improving blood circulation and metabolism. Not only that, sun salute helps focusing the mind and preparing for the rest of the sadhana – practice. It is meant to build tapas – heat and austerity of practice.
