Resolutions that Work Setting Intentions Not Goals
Resolutions that Work
A New Years Revolution
How many New Years resolutions have you set that actually manifested? Not so easy to follow through six months after, or even two months after we set an intention. Especially when it is a larger than life resolution. If you never go to the gym, and you set a resolution to go five days a week this year – good luck. Resolutions that work are an art. They are possible, but need to be made smartly.
Setting intentions is the process of reaching your goal. This is the system of creating resolutions that work. If for example your goal is to realize enlightenment, you can’t just close your eyes and have it. Well, technically you could, but for most of us it doesn’t work that way. So you need to take little steps, steps that you can actually achieve in a limited time frame. Maybe for today your intention is to eat a healthier lunch, and for this week, it is to meditate 10 minutes every day. These are tasks you know I could do.
Short term intentions are the building blocks of resolutions that work. It is the daily intention that becomes the weekly intention, that adds up to a monthly intention, and eventually becomes a yearly resolution.

What are resolutions that work?
When we set up mega resolutions, it is hard to complete them. It is easy to have excuses why today is not a good day to follow through, or why we don’t have time, but setting an intention is like signing a contract. It’s a commitment. So set intentions that you know you will actually do.
You can set grandiose intentions that may seem romantically beautiful but it’s more important to be realistic and set intentions that are somewhat challenging yet still within your reach. This is not to say, find excuses of what not to do, but rather enjoy setting intentions that do take you further, that do encourage you to practice and improve. All the while looking at a range of a relatively short time, a daily intention, a weekly intention, and maybe a three to four months intention. You can always extend your intention over and over again.
How to successfully create resolutions that work
- Set up – a weekly intention at a set time. Maybe you set it every Sunday night, or Friday morning, whatever works for you, just be consistent. During this time, sit and decide what is the little step you are going to manifest this week.
- Ritualize – Every morning as you wake up, have a ritual of setting your daily intention and connecting with your weekly intention. Decide on a time of day for your intention, say in the morning after washing up and before breakfast. Sit down, look at your watch and give yourself five minutes. Maybe set a timer, so you know you have the full five minutes just to sit and reflect.
- Visualize – sit for a few minutes and imagine yourself with the new resolution already working. Imagine yourself writing every day 500 words, or responding nicely to a regular aggravate, or opening the Doron Yoga YouTube channel to do your daily practice.
- Celebrate – Anytime you remember to follow through your intention, smile, feel internal success, or even share it with others. Reinforce new habits till they become part of your new reality.
- Reflect – After the week is over, reflect, where have you succeeded, where did it not work. Reflect and make adjustments and new intentions again on Sunday (or your set time) to make it work better next week. If the intention is a big change in your life, have patience. Celebrate the baby steps, and know that it is better to take small steps that a huge step and quit.
Take it seriously, but also accept that if you are doing the 5 steps mentioned, it may take time.
Be consistent and Patient
