Video and Tips on How to Step into a Lunge
Stepping into a Lunge
During a yoga class we are often asked “to step into a lunge”. That means bringing the foot forward into 90 degrees from down dog. For many this is a great challenge. The truth is that flexibility helps, especially in the hips, but there are some basic tricks that can make this more accessible. Even for those of us that are not that open from the hips.
-
- Look forward – The gaze (drsti) is very important. You will always have a tendency to land where you look. So by simply looking a bit forward, you already have far more chances of getting the foot there.
- Shift the body forward – If you already have the shoulders over the wrists, there is less distance you need to pass to step into a lunge.
- Shift weight to the other side – If you are trying to bring the right foot forward, you can shift some of your hip weight to the left first to create more space.
- Lift the right hand to your finger tips to create even more space.
Of course if still needed, use your hand to help the foot come all the way forward. Doing hip openers in remaining in the lunge pose for a while is very helpful.
This video shows you the tricks into making this transition easy. It has super clear instruction on how to step the foot forward into a lunge or to prepare for warrior poses. Great for any Ashtanga, Vinyasa or flow student.

Thanks for the great video!!!
Such a beautiful and clear explanation. I really like how you addressed such a common transition that many teachers may assume everyone knows and skip through them. This is the first time I heard the explanation, and it is so practical! Thank you!
Thank you Gil. Indeed it is sometimes the little things that make the biggest difference. Try this with Maya!
I Just started Yoga a couple of weeks ago (first time in 8 years). This video on doing lunges was really helpful! It totally worked for me. It is so encouraging to get immediate results for one particular thing that I had figured would have taken months to master.
it really worked… amazing! thanks and keep’m coming!
Thank you all! More videos coming soon! So happy to hear it is helpful.
