How to do the Ashtanga Vinyasa Marichiasana C

How to do the Ashtanga Vinyasa Marichiasana C

Marichiasana C – Ashtanga Primary Series.

Marichiasana C is part of the ashtanga vinyasa system. It arrives close to mid way of the seated poses, after quite a few forward folds. It is relatively a simple pose, yet it is offers release for the spine from all the previous forward folds. The ashtanga primary series is known for it’s forward folds and thus it is crucial to do the twists offered in the correct form.

Marichiasana C is the pose dedicated to the sage Marichi.  A wonderful twist to create space in the spine, improve digestion, open the shoulders and release tension.

Vinyasa classes may have different sequencing from the ashtanga vinyasa, and thus, this pose may be used after backbends. Doron loves twists anytime, but in his practice this pose comes after backbends as it helps bring the spine back to neutral.

How to do the ashtanga vinyasa marichiasana C twist

    • Make sure to keep the spine tall and long as you twist. Inhale for lengthening and exhale into the twist.
    • Use the drsti – gaze to take you deeper into the pose by looking further back as you twist.
    • Try and keep both sitting bones rooted into the earth. Do not stress your neck as you turn, but do move your head in the twisting direction.

You can do this as part of any hatha yoga practice, especially a vinyasa practice, or follow the ashtanga primary series where it is part of the seated poses.
